Together we achieve
Welcome To Year Three
Macaws' teacher: Mrs Jarvis
Toucans' teacher: Mrs Khan
Y3 teaching assistants: Mrs Allen & Mrs Vincent
This term we will be learning all about settlements, focusing in on our own locality of Reading town and Tilehurst village. We will conclude our studies by walking to McIlroy Park, to view our town and some of its physical and human geographical features. You are very welcome to join us on the walk too - a letter will follow soon with more details.
In English, we are starting the year by taking a look at poems that use the senses.
Homework
In year 3, we do reading and spellings for homework. Strong literacy skills are vital to a child's development, enjoyment and academic achievement.
It is essential for a child to learn to read fluently. We strongly encourage your child to read at home 5 times a week. We request that you record this in your child's reading record. Children can write in the book and pages read, but reading diaries must be signed by an adult each time a child reads. The number of times a child has read is counted up on a MONDAY and the more they read, the more credits they will earn.
Children need to complete an online 'Accelerated Reader' quiz in school or at home (link is at the bottom of this page) when they have finished a book to show how well they understood what was read. They can retake the if they aren't successful at first. The children will take a 'Star Reader' test at several points of the year, in order to establish their ZPD, which is the level at which they are reading and relates to the colour banded books that they read at school and home. Children's login details will be in the front of their homework diaries. On a FRIDAY we will check records and children will be awarded credits for each book quiz passed.
Children also need to regularly learn and practise their statutory spellings which are stuck in the back of their homework diary and are below. These are the words that all children in primary schools are expected to know by the end of their key stage as part of the English National Curriculum. We will choose 20 words at random from the list to test in the last week of term to track children's progress.
Our PE days are on Wednesdays (outdoors) and Thursdays (indoors), weather permitting. Our topics for Term 1 are Fundamentals and Dance. Please make sure children come in wearing full PE kit (trainers, black leggings/joggers, plain white t-shirt and red school jumper) on these days. Earrings must be removed or taped up and hair must be tied up if it can be.
