St Michael's Primary School

Together we achieve

Year 3

Welcome To Year Three

Macaws' teachers: Mrs Jarvis & Miss Street

Toucans' teacher: Mrs Khan

Y3 teaching assistants: Mrs Herbert, Mrs Vincent & Mr Mason

This is what we'll be covering this term:

Our topic this term:

Flow

Our final topic of Year 3 focuses on rivers, both in the UK and the rest of the world. We will start by learning about the Water Cycle,  before moving on to learning about the features of rivers.

In English, we will be creating recount writing in the form of a diary entry, as well as exploring performance poetry. Our writing will be inspired by the story The Wind in The Willows by Kenneth Graeme, whose story about life for a group of colourful animal characters, is set on the river Thames.

In science, we will be learning about States of Matter. Everything around us is made of matter, and it can exist in three forms: solids, liquids, and gases

In mathematics, we will continue to learn about time, before moving onto angles, followed by recapping 2D and 3D shapes and finishing the year with a look at pictograms and bar charts. We will also continue practicing our multiplication tables, which are so important and underpin so many other mathematical concepts. Please continue to help your child by practising them at home.

Please look at the PARENT OVERVIEW, also on this page, for a detailed breakdown of what else we will study in Term 6.

We look forward to sharing our work with you!

Reminder: Please make sure that your child comes to school with a water bottle and a hat. Don't forget to LABEL EVERYTHING! Thank you for your support. smiley

Homework

In year 3, we do reading and spellings for homework. Strong literacy skills are vital to a child's development, enjoyment and academic achievement.

It is essential for a child to learn to read fluently. We strongly encourage your child to read at home 5 times a week. We request that you record this in your child's reading record. Children can write in the book and pages read, but reading diaries must be signed by an adult each time a child reads. The number of times a child has read is counted up on a MONDAY and the more they read, the more credits they will earn.

Children need to complete an online 'Accelerated Reader' quiz in school or at home (link is at the bottom of this page) when they have finished a book to show how well they understood what was read. They can retake the quiz if they aren't successful at first. The children will take a 'Star Reader' test at several points of the year, in order to establish their ZPD, which is the level at which they are reading and relates to the colour banded books that they read at school and home. Children's login details will be in the front of their homework diaries. On a FRIDAY we will check records and children will be awarded credits for each book quiz passed.

Children also need to regularly learn and practise their statutory spellings which are stuck in the back of their homework diary and are below. These are the words that all children in primary schools are expected to know by the end of their key stage as part of the English National Curriculum. We will choose 20 words at random from the list to test in the last week of term to track children's progress.

Some handy questions to ask when listening to children read

Year 3 PE

Our PE days are every Monday (outdoors) and  Thursday (outdoors), weather permitting. Our topics for Term 6 are football and basketball. Please make sure children come in wearing full PE kit (trainers, black leggings/joggers, plain white t-shirt and red school jumper) on these days. Earrings must be removed or taped up and hair must be tied up if it can be.
